Sexual enhancement drinks may be attractive to the individual struggling to perform in the bedroom, yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned against the products. According to this Examiner report, the agency has warned two makers of such products that their sex aids could potentially cause harm to the body.

As a result of this warning, the FDA is also advising consumers that they should not purchase or use two sexual enhancement drinks known as "Rock Hard Extreme," and "Passion Coffee." Both products are promoted as dietary supplements to enhance libido.

The warned company, Drive Total Energy, has issued a voluntary recall of both drinks in response to the FDA warnings. Consumers are likely to react given the lower price of the drinks when compared with most other over the counter erectile aids.

Laboratory Analysis confirmed, however, that both drinks contained an undeclared ingredient, sulfaildenafil, structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. This undeclared ingredient could interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, including nitroglycerin and could lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

Men suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease will often take nitrates to try and combat the effects of their disease. Anyone mixing their medication with a Drive Total Energy drink may put their life at risk, unknowingly.

While Drive Total Energy has stated that they are unaware of any reports of harm caused to consumers as a result of their sexual enhancement drinks, the company still opted for the safer route in recalling its drinks until they can be deemed safe for consumption.

Are there particular genes that will determine whether or not we will develop an addiction to sex? This is the question posed in a recent The Scientist article.

Researchers from Yale University identified a naturally occurring mutant mouse in which males did not possess the Y chromosome, which is responsible for the formation of testes. The SRY gene was inserted into the autosomal chromosome of the mutant male so they would develop testes and crossed the animal with a normal female.

This model allowed the researchers to produce four phenotypes, which consisted of genetic males with testes; genetic males with ovaries; genetic females with ovaries; and genetic females with testes.

This model was based on the findings of a classic study that found females are more sensitive to the rewards of cocaine during the estrus phase of their menstrual cycle, which created the theory that hormone levels influence addictive behaviors.

In the current study, researchers wanted to determine how quickly the mice formed habitual behavior. Food was used as the test and the researchers found that the genetically female mice would continue habits even when the food was no longer pleasurable or the mice had stopped eating it altogether.

In this process, the researchers teased out behaviors that are more strongly associated with sex-related genes. This allowed the scientists to look for specific X-linked or Y-linked genes that could be targeted for addiction therapies.

The researchers involved argue that the results of this study suggest that depression and conditions such as Tourette’s syndrome might be affect by sex chromosome. This study also examines the habitual or compulsive behavior that plays into addiction.

Sexual addiction may be permeating the National Football League (NFL), but the commissioner’s office is determined to keep it from interfering with the game. According to a recent Crystal Air report, all players are prohibited from texting sexually explicit messages or photos during NFL games.

Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledges that the act of sexting has had an impact on the game, steadily degrading its quality. What started out as a few sporadic instances during half time in the locker room has blown into bigger proportions. Players are participating in sexting during timeouts, while on the sidelines and between downs. With the latest press surrounding lewd photos of Brett Favre, the NFL is starting to take hits.

Recent news surrounding the Favre incident shows that the quarterback was spending a great deal of time sexting while in a huddle on the field instead of actually calling plays. Younger players have complained about being confused by Favre’s plays as he was too caught up in his addiction to do his job properly.

One Viking player claims that Favre ruined the fun for the other players, but with many of them pulling in millions every year to play for a team; it hardly seems like the right thing to do “on the job”.

Interestingly, Favre’s recent arm injury was labeled as sexting elbow – according to this report. Doctors also note that the increase in the number of concussions among NFL players and the rise in incidents of sexting shouldn’t be considered a coincidence. And, if players don’t have their head in the game – they are likely to get hit full on and suffer the consequences.

As parents, we do our best to protect our children from things they are not ready to handle. One of those things is sex and pornography. According to a recent study, however, children in Jakarta are increasingly being exposed to pornography, which is increasing their vulnerability to sex addiction.

A report in the Jakarta Post shows that as many as two thirds of elementary students surveyed in this area are exposed through computer games, comics and websites. Surprisingly, most of these students were able to access pornography through gadgets they received from their parents.

Elly Risman, survey team psychologist working on this project, noted that these gadgets were only given to the children as symbols of prestige. Now, the gadgets are being used for purposes most likely not intended by the parents. Unfortunately, with the technology age, children can access pornography through a number of different channels.

Risman highlighted that traditional methods of parenting cannot apply in today’s technologically-based society. Parents need to be aware of sex addiction, which can be caused by exposure to pornography.

Randy Hyde, an American child and family psychologist stressed that stress addiction can actually affect a child’s development. According to Hyde, the addiction could affect the development of the frontal lobe in the brain. This is the region that controls the person’s ability to reason and rationalize, as well as their ability to set goals and to maintain self-discipline.

He also stressed that bright, spiritual, sensitive and tender-hearted children are vulnerable to sex addiction. Even as the children may feel guilty about what they do and wish to quit, they will at the same time become more and more addicted to the thing they want to avoid.

Is it possible for prescription drugs to cause addictions to gambling and pornography? The problem of prescription drug addiction has gotten much attention as of late, due to addictions directly to the drugs, not-indirect associations. According to a Med India report, however, two drug companies are now facing lawsuits over such allegations.

The drugs in question are used to treat Parkinson’s disease and the group involved in the lawsuit reportedly lost significant sums of money and facing breakdowns in the family as a result of compulsive gambling activities. A few of them also displayed compulsive sexual behavior. They believe the cause of their gambling and porn addiction was the drugs they consumed between 1997 and 2009.

The companies at the center of this suit are Pfizer Australia and Aspen Phamacare. The drugs that were consumed included Cabaser by Pfizer and Permax by Aspen Pharmacare. Both medications are known as dopamine agonists, which means they mimic the effects of dopamine in the brain. This “rush” is believed to cause risk-taking behavior and addictions.

The pharmaceuticals are being accused of breaching their duty of care by failing to properly research potential side effects of their drugs, or by failing to heed research and how it may apply to side effects. The companies have not yet responded to the accusations leveraged against them.

The outcome of this lawsuit will have an impact on the global industry, however, as individuals throughout the world rely on prescription medications to treat a wide variety of afflictions.

Virtual infidelity is likely something most of us would not have thought of 20 years ago, yet technology today is opening up a whole new world of options – both good and bad. A recent Gulf News report found that the rate of incidents of virtual infidelity and indecent behavior is rapidly rising in the UAE.

This rapid growth could have a profound effect on the social and family life in the UAE. One leading psychologist reports that the area is wrought with impaired belief systems, a high number of online users and devious ways to circumvent filters to gain access to prohibited materials.

Even worse, these individuals can use such systems with anonymity, which ensures they become more uninhibited and are more likely to do things they would not normally do. The stories are vast and the potential devastation when loved ones hear of their activities is great.

Dr. R. McCarthy is a private counselor at The Counseling & Development Clinic in Dubai. McCarthy notes that roughly 40 percent of cyber sex addicts in the country are married women. Teenagers are also said to be a group that is more vulnerable.

In the UAE, Cyber-Crime Law No. 2 demands that those convicted of stimulating a male or female in order to commit adultery or prostitution with the use of the Internet or using the Internet to blackmail another person to commit lewd acts can lead to prison of up to 10 years.

Typically, the cycle of cyber sex revolves around the preoccupation and virtualization before the sexual behavior actually becomes compulsive and can lead to despair. A low self-esteem helps to exacerbate the problem and vulnerability among youngsters can make the individual prone to fall under the spell of a stranger who will take sexual advantages.

RadarOnline.com claims that the first photos of Tiger Woods being spotted at a rehab for sexual addiction in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, have surfaced. The golfer has not been seen in public since crashing his car into a tree shortly after Thanksgiving, an accident that was the catalyst to several women coming forward claiming to have had affairs with the celebrity, who is married and has two young children. Woods eventually confessed to infidelity, and he said he would take an indefinite break from golf while he tries to save his marriage.

RadarOnline.com reported that Woods checked into the Gentle Path program, part of Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services. The photos of Woods appear in the new issue of the National Enquirer.

Multiple sources confirmed to RadarOnline.com that Woods is being treated at the clinic, which features a sexual addiction program created by Dr. Patrick Carnes, who has pioneered treatment for sexually compulsive behavior.

The Enquirer broke the world exclusive story of Woods’ five-month affair with Rachel Uchitel. After that report appeared, more than 14 women were linked to Woods.
Now the Enquirer is reporting exclusive details of Tiger’s treatment and has solved the mystery of his location since Thanksgiving. The Enquirer photos, taken from far away, are grainy and it is difficult to see Tiger’s face. He is wearing a hoodie and a baseball cap, making it even more difficult to see details.

Magnification of the photos also shows facial hair that he has sported in the past and adds more detail. An eyewitness confirmed there was no doubt that the man in the photograph is Woods, saying that while he was bundled up, the golfer was recognizable in person.
According to sources, Woods is living without a roommate in one of the cottages at Gentle Path. The Enquirer reports that he checked into the six-week program on December 30.Two local TV stations have reported that Woods is in the facility and a writer for the New York Times has also confirmed the report.

Sex addiction can affect anyone, including high-profile men like actor David Duchovny and former ESPN analyst Steve Phillips, who recently entered rehab for sex addiction after being fired from ESPN for having intimate relationships with co-workers on the show.

Rosemary Black of the New York Daily News writes that sex addiction is no different from other addictions: wrecking relationships, destroying families and causing losses, pain and heartbreak.

“When your relationship isn’t going well and you are stressed out, you want to make the bad feelings go away and so some people reach for the fix that helps the feelings go away,” says Leslie Sokol, Ph.D., author of “Think Confident Be Confident.”

“Some people are able to rationalize seeking out sex because they tell themselves, ‘I have been so good in other ways that I should be able to have this.’ Or they may rationalize it by saying that their wife has turned them down or that they feel unattractive,” Sokol continues.

Sex addiction is a distraction from one’s feelings, according to psychologist David Eigen. “A lot of men use sex as a replacement for other emotions and when they are not fulfilled in other areas,” he explains.

Sex addiction has an obsessive-compulsive component to it, says psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert. “There’s a lack of impulsive control here, as the reward far outweighs the risk at the time,” he says. “It’s often the risk that drives the person toward the behavior.”

For some, the risks that a sex addict is willing to take can result in adverse and life-altering changes: a public confession, in-patient treatment, the end of a marriage. Steve Phillips’ wife, Marni Phillips, filed for divorce last month; David Duchovny and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, were separated for some time after he confessed about his sex addiction, though they are now reunited; and British actor and comic Russell Brand wrote a book that detailed his addiction and recovery at a Philadelphia rehab center in 2005.

Treatment can be effective but may only be started because the sex addict gets scared, Alpert says. “For example, he might get a diagnosis of an STD, or a significant other may find out about the sexual escapades,” says Alpert. “Their business and money may be impacted, or a boss or colleague may learn of the activities.”

The most effective treatment, which Alpert says can be done in an office-based setting, should focus on identifying the reasons for the person’s actions and developing new coping strategies.

Sokol feels that nearly everyone has the potential for an addiction, but that some people are much more vulnerable. “For some, the addictive urge crosses over the line to where it starts to compromise relationships and impede a person’s ability to get things done and meet their goals,” she says.

For those who eventually seek treatment for sex addiction, overcoming the feelings of helplessness is an important goal, Sokol says. “A sex addict needs to say to himself that despite all the mistakes he has made, he is a decent person,” she says. “He needs to want to change things, to want to matter again to the people who matter to him.”

Sex Addicts Anonymous is a fellow of men and women who help each other recover from sexual addiction or dependency. The program is a 12-step model based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop addictive sexual behavior. There are no fees or dues.

Meetings are found in many communities, and if you are shy at first you can attend their online meetings. If you are not yet ready to admit you have a sex addiction problem, you should look for what is called an “open” meeting, which can be attended by anyone.

Members of SA will tell you that only you can decide if you are a sex addict and if you want help. Rarely do people succeed when they are “forced” to get treatment.

Here are some signs SA says may help you determine if you are a sex addict:

Although sex addicts may act out sexually in many different ways, there are common threads that seem to characterize our addiction:

Powerlessness over addictive sexual behavior.

Resulting unmanageability of his/her life.

Feelings of shame, pain, and self-loathing.

Failed promises and attempts to stop acting out.

Preoccupation with sex leading to ritual.
