This week Sandra Bullock’s husband, Jesse James, reportedly checked himself into rehab for sex addiction treatment. James’ story began just after Bullock won an Academy Award for her performance in The Blind Side, and it appears she was totally blind-sided by James’ affairs.

The first reported affair was revealed by tattoo “model” Michelle McGee. McGee’s shocking appearance made many heads turn. What sort of fool would cheat on such a talented and beautiful actress as Sandra Bullock with a woman like McGee? Remember, however, James was once married to a porn star. It seems James has is drawn to the bad girl or “dirty girl” archetype.

In a public apology on March 19th, James said, "It’s because of my poor judgment that I deserve everything bad that is coming my way.”

Since the initial revelation, a number of other women have come forward to report their affairs. The fact that these women so brazenly reveal their “relationship” with a married man can tell you something of the quality of the character of the women James gravitated toward outside of his marriage. Most women cringe and think, “I’d be too embarrassed to admit it!” Money may be one of the motivators, or a cheap 15 minutes of fame.

Many people reacted to the story that James is going to treatment for sex addiction with, “He’s just a pig. I’m tired of people saying they are sex addicts to get out of their responsibility for being jerks.”

Although this is an understandable response, going to treatment is not escaping responsibility; it is an act of facing your problems. Consider the fact that James is married to a successful, powerful, and beautiful woman. She was raising his children. Why would any rational person jeopardize that relationship? Is it just a case of the bad boy looking for the bad girl? Or does this behavior indicate a deeper problem?

Sex addiction is a compulsive disorder characterized by poor choices; the behavior is impulsive and those with sex addiction ignore the potential consequence because their desire to feed their craving is so powerful. Why would a successful person drink themselves to death? These are not people making rational decisions.

While many men do have affairs and cheat on their wives, there is a dividing line between infidelity and sex addiction. We might smirk and dismiss this as an excuse, but this compulsive obsession with sex with multiple partners can mean a bleak life of failed relationships as the person searches for the high of sex.

Sex addiction is an intimacy disorder. Sex addicts often report constant and intrusive sexual thoughts, and that as the tension builds, it is sex that gives them relief. However, as the addiction progresses, they have to have more sex with more people to get the same effect or high. As their behavior escalates, they reap more negative consequences. Sex addicts ignore the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, loss of truly intimate relationships, and ridicule by others.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders (IV) describes sex addiction, under the category “Sexual Disorders Not Otherwise Specified,” as “distress about a pattern of repeated sexual relationships involving a succession of lovers who are experienced by the individual only as things to be used.” According to the manual, sex addiction also involves “compulsive searching for multiple partners, compulsive fixation on an unattainable partner, compulsive masturbation, compulsive love relationships and compulsive sexuality in a relationship.”

Because sex is such an essential part of human behavior – and is in fact a basic driving need that ensures survival of the species – it can be harder to tease out the maladapted forms of sexual behavior. However, when the behavior seems irrational – who would trade her for them, destroy a good family life for short-term flings – we may be seeing a compulsive, addictive process.

Former ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips recently talked to TODAY’s Matt Lauer about his battle with sex addiction, which he calls a very real and devastating affliction.

“People look at sex addiction as an excuse; it’s not an excuse. I’m fully responsible for everything that I did and accept responsibility for that,” Phillips said in his first interview since leaving the Gentle Path sex addiction program at the same Mississippi treatment center that is said to have just finished treating Tiger Woods.

“I’ve broken my wife’s heart,” Phillips said. “I’ve damaged her and our relationship in a terrible way.”

Mike Celizic of TODAYshow.com writes that last August, Brooke Hundley, a 22-year-old production assistant at ESPN, told Phillips’ wife Marni that she had had an affair with him. Hundley, who also contacted Phillips’ 16-year-old son through the Internet, posing as a classmate, confronted Marni in front of her home. Terrified, Marni called the police.

This wasn’t the first time Phillips’ sex addiction got him in trouble. In 1998, while he was the general manager of the New York Mets, a co-worker filed a sexual harassment suit against him that forced him to take a brief leave of absence from his job. The case was settled out of court.

Phillips told Lauer that he knew he had a problem back then, but he didn’t look at it as an addiction. “I didn’t go to a clinic; I just got some local therapy,” he said. “I tried to manage everything on my own. I didn’t get the appropriate help that I needed.”

Celizic writes that everything finally came crashing down when he had three sexual adventures with Hundley last summer. After the affair ended, Hundley contacted Marni and then the eldest of the Phillips’ four sons. When Marni made her 911 call after Hundley confronted her in her own driveway, the story hit the New York tabloids.

“I think of all that my family’s gone through,” Phillips said. “People choose to participate in a relationship, but my wife and kids didn’t. With what my wife and kids have gone through, the trauma that they’ve faced, not only from having a father and a husband that’s a sex addict, but the trauma of the media attention, they’ve been through a lot.”

Phillips told Lauer that he realized he was out of control after he broke off the affair with Hundley. “I started calling facilities in August, well before everything blew up, and before there really was a problem where I ended up losing my job,” he said. “I knew I had a problem; I needed to get help.”

By the time he entered treatment in October, both Phillips and Hundley had been fired by ESPN. Now living in California, Hundley told NBC News that she regrets what happened.
“I’m sorry for him and his family. I’m sorry for my family. I was 22; I made some mistakes. If I could take them back, I would, OK?” she said.

The program Phillips completed is a 12-step program similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, whose first step calls on members to recognize that they are powerless over their addictions and their lives have become unmanageable.

“People who go there are broken people,” Phillips explained. “That’s really the essence of the addiction, that you’re broken inside. You’ve got a hole that you’ve tried to fill, whether it was with alcohol or drugs or sex or gambling, with whatever. You go there and try to get the basics of why did you do what you did,” he added. “For most addicts, whether it’s alcohol or sex or whatever, it is that you have that hole inside based upon shame and trauma that occurred from childhood.”

When asked if Tiger Woods is really a sex addict, E! Online’s Leslie Gornstein talked to addiction treatment specialists to get the low-down. "Probably 75 percent of the people who come in for treatment come because they’re being forced to," says Dr. Howard Samuels of Wonderland Treatment Center in Los Angeles.

"Whether it’s drug, alcohol, or sex addiction they’re coming in for, it’s usually because of family or the courts or massive outside pressure forcing this person to change,” he continued.

"The chemicals that are released in the brain when people are acting out with sex dependency are every bit as powerful as any substance they could be putting into their body," says Dr. Shari Corbitt, senior executive director at Promises Treatment Centers in West Los Angeles, which also treats sex addiction when paired with substance abuse.

Reports have indicated that Woods’ wife Elin Nordegren has been visiting him in sex rehab at a program called "Gentle Path" at the Pine Grove Behavioral Health & Addiction Services treatment center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Addiction experts say that spouses are usually very involved in an addiction recovery process.

"Couples therapy is a huge part of the treatment," says Corbitt. "It would actually be odd if she weren’t visiting."

Addiction experts say it’s likely that the Woods’ sessions are going for anywhere from 90 minutes apiece to two and a half hours or even longer. Tiger may be asked to spill exactly how many affairs he’s had so that the healing process can begin.

RadarOnline.com claims that the first photos of Tiger Woods being spotted at a rehab for sexual addiction in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, have surfaced. The golfer has not been seen in public since crashing his car into a tree shortly after Thanksgiving, an accident that was the catalyst to several women coming forward claiming to have had affairs with the celebrity, who is married and has two young children. Woods eventually confessed to infidelity, and he said he would take an indefinite break from golf while he tries to save his marriage.

RadarOnline.com reported that Woods checked into the Gentle Path program, part of Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services. The photos of Woods appear in the new issue of the National Enquirer.

Multiple sources confirmed to RadarOnline.com that Woods is being treated at the clinic, which features a sexual addiction program created by Dr. Patrick Carnes, who has pioneered treatment for sexually compulsive behavior.

The Enquirer broke the world exclusive story of Woods’ five-month affair with Rachel Uchitel. After that report appeared, more than 14 women were linked to Woods.
Now the Enquirer is reporting exclusive details of Tiger’s treatment and has solved the mystery of his location since Thanksgiving. The Enquirer photos, taken from far away, are grainy and it is difficult to see Tiger’s face. He is wearing a hoodie and a baseball cap, making it even more difficult to see details.

Magnification of the photos also shows facial hair that he has sported in the past and adds more detail. An eyewitness confirmed there was no doubt that the man in the photograph is Woods, saying that while he was bundled up, the golfer was recognizable in person.
According to sources, Woods is living without a roommate in one of the cottages at Gentle Path. The Enquirer reports that he checked into the six-week program on December 30.Two local TV stations have reported that Woods is in the facility and a writer for the New York Times has also confirmed the report.

Sources say Tiger Woods is seeking treatment for sexual addiction at a clinic in Cape Town, South Africa, according to The Sun. The golfer has been keeping a low profile since details emerged of at least one affair, though up to 14 women have claimed to have had relations with him and his wife, former model Elin Nordegren, has threatened divorce.

Several people claim to have spotted Woods around Cape Town, and he is said to be undergoing treatment for sexual addiction at the Montrose Place facility in the upmarket suburb of Bishopscourt/

Elin, who has two children with Woods, reportedly told friends she was "100 percent" determined to end their marriage because Tiger had refused to attend a clinic for his sex addiction.

Staff at Montrose Place would not comment on whether Woods was at the facility, saying only: "Montrose Place is a reputable treatment facility and no matter what the circumstances, no patient names would ever be revealed."

Since news of his affairs broke, Tiger’s involvement with major sponsors Accenture, Gillette, Gatorade, and Tag Heuer have been scaled back, potentially costing him millions if deals aren’t renewed in the future.

David Duchovny, who was treated for sex addiction last year, claims he had his first erotic experience when he was just 6 years old. The "X Files" actor admits he had such a huge crush on his first grade teacher, and used to make up excuses so she could touch him.

"I always ran around extra wildly, so that she had to catch and grab me,” he told German TV channel Tele 5.

Duchovny believes his sexual appetite grew to such extreme levels because sex is a form of escapism for him.

"Sex, to me, means I can forget myself. It’s just the moment. I heard that skiing is even better than sex. It could be possible—but I’m not a skier."

However, the 49-year-old star is fully aware that his addiction to sex almost destroyed his marriage to wife Tea Leoni, the mother of his children Madelaine, 10, and Kyd, 7.

"My family and I have had a very hard year. Today I’m as happy as ever. I’m ultimately grateful for all the difficulties. My wife and I have gone through that together and now we are even stronger,” he said.

On “Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew,” Phil Varone tells Dr. Drew Pinksy and sex addiction therapist Jill Vermeire that he “needs to have women’s bodies.” He talks about watching women from windows and other voyeuristic and exhibitionistic behavior. But as much as he craves sexual variety, he longs for a real relationship with a woman.

Varone, a drummer and recovering cocaine addict, tells the story of a watching a 15-year-old girl from his room with binoculars. She would keep her window open, he says, and "explore her body." He explains that she must have known that he was watching her, and that although he hasn’t seen her in 20 to 30 years, he would “go nuts” if he saw her again.

Jill asks if he has engaged in any other types of voyeuristic activity as an adult, and Varone said yes. Jill explains that the voyeuristic activity he is describing is akin to Level II offender behavior: There are unknown victims, but victims regardless. They are participating "unknowingly."

Varone says he knows it’s not right, and Jill explains that it is important for him to understand that his addiction has led him here.

Varone also recalls a woman he used to see in Miami, when he was heavily into drugs. She lived in a building that was parallel to another building with large windows, and the buildings were about 100 feet across from one another. The "idea" of the building was that people would have sex with the windows open, and everyone watches each other–like watching TV. They would do their "show" along with a great deal of cocaine, and watch others have "mind-blowing sex."

When Varone, who claims to have been a geek in high school, first began touring, he suddenly found himself pursued by women, and a whole new world opened up for him. He estimates that he has slept with over 3,000 women, and said his sex addiction escalated when his mother died 11 years ago. He desperately wants to have a committed, caring relationship, but says that he prefers dating multiple women and feels that he would become bored with just one person.

Brooke Hundley, whose affair with the former ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips rocked the sports world and prompted Phillips to enter rehab for sex addiction, broke her silence and opened up to Kate Snow of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Hundley admitted that late-night talk show host Jay Leno’s comments about her appearance pushed her to the “breaking point.” She explained, "I had a friend come stay with me because he was concerned …that mentally I would not be able to take much more.”

In an opening monologue after the sex scandal broke, Leno compared a photo of Hundley to Phillips’ wife, Marni, and asked, "What was he thinking?"

Hundley took responsibility for the anguish she caused Marni Phillips by delivering her a letter detailing the affair with her husband. "I brought it on, but not intentionally," Hundley said. "I simply wanted somebody to get upset enough to have an impact, to get me out of this horrific situation."

Asked if she has a message for her former lover, Hundley said she hoped Phillips "would grow up and take responsibility for his own actions."

Hundley became a punchline after a frantic Marni Phillips made a 911 call in August telling them a "crazy" woman was on her property and gave her a letter.

"I’m the woman he’s been seeing for a while now," she wrote in the letter. "I’m not just some random girl he had sex with in parking lots."

This was followed by revelations that Hundley cyberstalked Phillips’ son via Facebook and asked him questions about his parents’ love life.

A former general manager of the New York Mets whose tenure there was marred by another sex scandal, Phillips admitted to three sexual encounters with Hundley.

He called Hundley "obsessive and delusional," and told cops he feared for the safety of his family.

ESPN fired both of them as the scandal spread.

Hundley declined to go into detail about the affair but insisted she was no stalker and "didn’t harass anyone." "I did things I regret, obviously," she added. "People make mistakes at 22."

Hundley said she was too afraid to tell ESPN’s human resources department that she had sex with one of their top on-air talents.

"I was in a situation where I felt like if I didn’t do what was asked of me, then everything I had worked for, for the past six years, everything I had done to establish myself as a successful media professional, could be gone like that," she said.

Hundley filed for an order of protection against Phillips in August. In it, she claimed he pursued her and threatened her, "stating that if I spoke a word of this to his wife that he would ruin more than just my reputation but could easily get me fired."

Hundley later withdrew the application, and told Snow that she and Phillips have resolved their issues.

She also said she decided to speak out to help other women trapped in disastrous affairs.

"I’ve been called things by the public that no woman should ever be called," she said. "I’ve been called a homewrecker."

Kendra Jade Rossi, former porn star and wife of Rockstar Supernova front man Lucas Rossi, is one of the eight celebrities getting help for their sex addiction on Dr. Drew’s new reality show on VH1.

On “Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew,” Kendra admits that she was molested from the age of 2 until she was finally emancipated at the age of 14, and that she was raped in her teens.

Dr. Drew says that most children who are sexually abused grow up to believe that their only worth is for sex and points to Kendra’s story as a prime example.

On the website she shares with her husband, www.meettherossis.com, Kendra tells of her struggle to climb up from a troubled childhood to the glamorous life of a Hollywood celebrity.

The oldest of five children, Kendra was born in East Hampton, Massachusetts and spent several years bouncing between her own less-than-ideal home and foster homes until she finally gained her emancipation at age 14. After that she took on the responsibility of raising her two much younger sisters. She entered the adult film industry in 1998 and quickly became a star and favorite of the Howard Stern Show.

During her intake interview, Kendra tells Dr. Drew that as a result of being molested and rape at such an early age she quickly came to believe that "sex equaled love." She confesses that she has cheated on everyone she has ever been in a relationship with and is now trying to get help for her addiction because she does not want to cheat on her husband.
