Pro Football Hall of Famer and former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Lawrence Taylor, who was recently charged in the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl, admitted in 2004 to spending about $1,000 daily on escort services, often calling six prostitutes a day.

"It was a hell of an expensive party, let me tell you," Taylor told 60 Minutes in a 2004 interview. "That party never ended."

The former New York Giants linebacker had a highly publicized struggle with drug addiction and had multiple legal run-ins before he was arrested and charged Thursday in the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl. "I saw coke as the only bright spot in my future," Taylor told 60 Minutes, in 2004.

"I had gotten really bad. I mean my place was almost like a crack house, not where you sold it, but I had a lot of stuff in my house," Taylor said in the interview, adding that at the time he didn’t want to know anyone who wasn’t an addict, dealer, or hooker.

In 2001, Taylor was convicted of possessing drug paraphernalia in New Jersey. The conviction stemmed from the September 1998 discovery in a hotel room of a butane torch and other materials commonly used to smoke crack cocaine.

In 1996 and 1997, he was arrested in South Carolina and Florida on drug charges. In those cases, he either admitted his guilt or agreed to enter a pretrial intervention program.
In 2000, he drew five years of federal probation for filing false tax returns and for tax evasion.

Taylor was arrested Thursday in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old girl in a suburban New York City hotel room, and another man is accused of bringing her there, police said.

He was arrested at a Holiday Inn in Suffern, said Christopher St. Lawrence, supervisor of the town of Ramapo. The alleged victim, at 16, is one year below the legal age of consent in New York, St. Lawrence said.

On March 30, Monster Garage host and West Coast Choppers owner Jesse James reportedly checked himself into the Sierra Tucson Treatment Center in Arizona to help manage his “personal issues,” possibly sex addiction, in hopes of saving his dilapidated marriage to Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock.

Just days after receiving her award for Best Actress, Bullock went into seclusion while rumors of James’ infidelity began surfacing in the media. Bullock has remained out of the public eye in her Hollywood Hills home with James’ three children, for whom she shares joint custody with James. Less than two weeks after reports of James’ mistresses came to light, James made the decision to enter himself into the rehabilitation facility. Since the first report, an alleged seven mistresses have come forward claiming that they each had an affair with James just weeks after his marriage to Bullock in 2005 and while Bullock was away filming her award-winning performance in The Blind Side.

James’ representative made the statement: “Jesse checked himself into a treatment facility to deal with personal issues. He realized that this time was crucial to help himself, help his family, and help save his marriage.” James has been described by friends and sources as “a broken man,” “desperate,” and “still in love with Sandra.” His move to enter the 45-day treatment program after making a public apology to Bullock and his children is an attempt to salvage his marriage and show remorse. James stated in his apology that he had used “poor judgment” and deserved “everything bad that is coming my way.” However, after Bullock reportedly refused to take phone calls from James and news rose that Bullock has no intent to reconcile, James checked himself out of the Sierra Tucson facility after five days of treatment. E! News has reported that James still remains in “a program,” and does not rule out the chance of him returning to Sierra Tucson.

Treatment for sexual addiction is intended to restore the patient’s sense of identity, self-worth, self-esteem, safety, and trust. Sexual therapy can induce emotional revelations concerning the patient’s suppressed feelings, memories, and perspectives involving honesty, trust, truth, fear, and dependency. Most programs assist patients with discovering their own coping mechanisms, developing logical thinking processes, and becoming secure sexually, emotionally, physically, and psychologically. Therapy is implemented in conjunction with 12-step programming and aftercare preparation such as lifestyle adjustments and securing the patient’s home environment. Treatment for sexual compulsivity conditions can also involve treatment for other behavioral disorders such as substance abuse or anger management since the conditions are usually comorbid.

If James is serious about his rehabilitation efforts, he has a strenuous journey ahead of him; he must remain dedicated and open-minded in order to fully complete the recovery program set up for his individual needs. Like James, Tiger Woods entered himself into a treatment facility to help cope with his personal crises and to recover emotionally and psychologically. Woods is continually being held accountable for his extensive acts of infidelity, and he continues to approach his problems with the guidance of his recovery program. Both James’ and Woods’ futures with their wives remain unknown amidst their current rehabilitation efforts, but recognition of their behavioral disorders is the first step towards a lifetime of recovery.

At a weekly meeting of Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) in Boston, most of the 50 men and women are professionals, and some are students and retirees. Bella English of Boston.com writes that this could be a meeting to save the rainforests—but these people are trying to save themselves.

Tiger Woods’s admission of infidelity has cast a spotlight on treatment for sexual addiction. Though some believe the term is an excuse for men behaving badly, there is a growing acceptance that sexual addiction is a medical condition similar to compulsive gambling and overeating.

The most recent edition of the International Classification of Diseases, written by the World Health Organization, lists “excessive sexual drive” as a diagnosis. Last week, the American Psychiatric Association proposed that “hypersexual disorder” be included in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The proposal will be debated over the next two years.

Many agree that compulsive sexual behavior is a condition that can require treatment ranging from medication to residential treatment programs. The rise of Internet pornography (much of it free and anonymous) has fueled the problem. Patrick Carnes, a pioneer in the field, believes that 3 to 6 percent of the population suffers from the condition, which he defines as compulsive behavior that interferes with normal living.

“With the advent of the Internet and access to pornography, the number of men coming for help now who have serious problems with porn has increased greatly,” says Dr. Martin P. Kafka, who has treated more than 1,000 people with sexual disorders. “I think this whole thing is very scary for women.”

Kafka, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, has discovered that mood disorders such as bipolar disease and depression are often linked with hypersexual behavior. He treats such patients with antidepressants or mood stabilizers and Ritalin if they have attention deficit disorder.

“In society now, we commonly refer to sex as an addiction, and when we do that, we’re destigmatizing it as a completely moral problem,” Kafka says. “We’re saying there’s something else going on here.”

Suki Hanfling, director of the Institute for Sexuality and Intimacy in Belmont, says sex addiction is different from bad behavior. “A person who’s narcissistic may feel, ‘I’m entitled to this, I’m not getting caught, it’s great,’” she says. “But with a sexual addiction, those people often end up hating themselves and feeling a lot of shame and guilt. Usually people feel awful about it, except when they’re doing it.”

Kafka treats paraphilias (sex offenders, some of them sex addicts). But most of his caseload deals with “totally harmless guys” who are simply obsessed with sex.
“These men have what you call normal sexual arousal, except it is excessive and disinhibited,” he says. “They’re mostly self-destructive.”

Jeff, who ran the recent SLAA meeting, says that description fits him. An engineer, he describes a former life out of control, with constant trips to strip bars, “dirty movie houses,” peep shows, prostitutes, and porn sites. Even after he contracted venereal diseases, he didn’t stop. His low point came, he says, when, in a dream-like state he sexually assaulted his sleeping wife.

“She called the police and had me thrown out, with a restraining order,” Jeff says. He entered a residential treatment program for sex addicts, the couple went into therapy, and he has been attending SLAA meetings for more than 20 years. He and his wife, who have two grown children, reunited, and Jeff says he has been “abstinent’’ from compulsive sex for 12 years.

Those in SLAA use the 12-step model of Alcoholics Anonymous. To be abstinent or sober means that you haven’t violated any of the rules you list on your “bottom line.” In Jeff’s case, that means he doesn’t do anything that would physically or emotionally hurt himself or others, such as having an affair.

Though the majority of sex addicts are men, women also struggle with the issue. Jennie, 50, has been married and divorced twice. By her 40s, she had slept with at least 25 men.
The eldest of five children, she grew up responsible for her siblings. “The one way I knew to get attention was to be sexual,” says Jennie. “From my early teens, I would go out with bad boys and have sex with them.”

As a child, she says, she was sexually abused by someone close to her. In adulthood, every relationship became obsessive. “I would completely lose interest in my friends and everything else; my life revolved completely around the men. I would have sex constantly every time we got together as a way of providing a connection.”

Finally, after having a relationship with a married colleague, Jennie checked into an eight-week residential treatment program. When she returned, she broke it off with her colleague, took a leave from her job, and has been in recovery for three years.

“It means for the first time in my life I like myself,” Jennie says. “It means I have friendships with women who in the past were always my competitors. It means I can have a hug with someone and I know it’s not going to turn sexual.”

She has been going to SLAA meetings for five years and says she will do so for the rest of her life. “If I don’t stay with it, there’s a really good chance I’ll relapse.”

If it’s difficult to be a sex addict, what’s it like to be married to one? One couple was married for more than 20 years when she discovered his affair through an e-mail. He confessed that he had been lost in Internet pornography and was hooking up with other women through chat and dating sites. The couple took out a second mortgage on their home and paid $31,000 for him to enter the Pine Grove residential treatment center in Mississippi, run by Patrick Carnes (the same center that former ESPN analyst Steve Phillips said he attended).

In the residential program, the man met others who had spent fortunes on phone sex and prostitutes. “We were blind to what we were doing,” he says. “We were leading a double life, compartmentalizing it all.”

He attends two SLAA meetings a week, and if he finds himself slipping (“glancing at a bra ad or noticing a woman on the beach for a little longer than is comfortable for me”) he calls his sponsor for guidance.

He says Pine Grove saved his life, with structured days that included psychotherapy, lectures, yoga, art therapy, 12-step meetings, spirituality and grief groups, shame reduction, and exercise.

Thomas Tullos, who was the clinical director at Pine Grove for five years, says sex addicts must establish a healthy relationship with sex—not abstain from it completely. “These are men and women who have, over time, used sexual behavior to medicate their feelings,” says Tullos, who now treats addicts in his private practice in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Neither the husband nor the wife know if their marriage will survive. “It’s a very, very, hard thing for spouses, because sex is such a personal part of your identity,” she says. “It’s impossible not to take personally.”

Still, she has empathy for her husband. “There is no compassion for this on the part of society,” she says. “People don’t realize that if you look at it as a disease, that person is in pain.”

Following an accident outside his Florida home over Thanksgiving weekend, Woods was connected to numerous alleged mistresses, leading to questions about the golfer’s potential “sexual compulsion.”

The accident supposedly followed an argument with his wife, Elin Nordegren, regarding a text message from one of the alleged mistresses, Rachel Uchitel. The officer investigating the accident reportedly requested a subpoena because he thought Vicodin or Ambien may have been a factor in the crash.

Other reports say Woods traveled to Arizona for reconstructive facial surgery that he needed after Nordegren allegedly hit him in the side of the face with a 9-iron during their Thanksgiving confrontation.

A message received by legendary sports writer Furman Bisher of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution claims Woods ran from his house, without shoes, while Elin continued swinging the club at him.

"When [Elin] hit Tiger, she put a huge gash in the right side of his face next to his nose… knocking out two of his upper teeth, and breaking the bone on the upper right side," the message reads.

The rumors that Tiger Woods was cheating on his wife, former Swedish model Elin Nordegren, have brought to light the question of why some men cheat on attractive women. Although the rumors haven’t been confirmed by Woods, he recently admitted to “transgressions” and “personal sins,” and apologized for hurting his family after a car accident raised eyebrows.

This week, Woods backed his car into a fire hydrant and a tree in the middle of the night, and his wife was said to have broken the back windshield of the car with a golf club in an attempt to help him. Woods refused to speak publicly about the nature of the accident, and has withdrawn from upcoming tournaments citing injuries from the accident. Woods’ secrecy fueled rumors of an affair, and former VH1 reality star and cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs recently told Us Weekly that she and Woods had been having an affair since meeting in Las Vegas in 2007—two months before Woods’ wife gave birth to their first child.

Grubbs told Us Weekly that their 31-month relationship included 20 sexual encounters, and that she was sorry Woods’ wife would be reading these intimate details. Woods has also been linked to Rachel Uchitel, who manages VIP events at successful clubs in New York, though she denies any involvement with the golfer. Life & Style magazine also recently featured an article on Kalika Moquin, a marketing manager at a Las Vegas club, claiming she “hooked up” with Woods several times.

After Us Weekly reported Grubbs’ story, Woods stated that he let his family down and that he regrets these “transgressions” with “all of (his) heart.” He writes on his website: "I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone."

Many people are shocked that Woods would risk losing his beautiful wife, and although the public doesn’t know the behind-the-scenes details of their marriage, infidelity experts say it’s not surprising that guys like Woods seek sex outside of their marriage.

Cosmopolitan magazine writes that the reasons some men are unfaithful are rarely about the sex itself, but because cheating fuels a deep psychological need. "Several factors make some men more likely to stray, even if they are dating or married to a beautiful woman," says Don-David Lusterman, PhD, author of Infidelity: A Survival Guide.

The first factor is the man’s level of success. Men in high-profile, powerful positions (such as celebrities, athletes, business executives, and politicians) often have a sense of superiority and entitlement. "These guys have achieved a certain status, and bedding several attractive women further reinforces it in their mind," says Lusterman. Moreover, these men are constantly on the road, away from their girlfriends and wives, and their prominence attracts women who offer no-strings-attached sex. "They may have a wonderful partner waiting at home, but the situation they’re in, coupled with their role of pursuer, makes it that much easier to cheat," adds Lusterman.

Plenty of “regular” men are unfaithful too, especially when their backgrounds condone it. Many cheaters come from chauvinistic cultures or families where their fathers cheated. “There are internal blueprints (created by watching our parents) that make cheating more of an option for some guys,” says Dr. Debbie Magids, author of All the Good Ones Aren’t Taken. Men who were ignored as children often develop deep trust issues, which can make long-term relationships difficult. “Chronic cheating is rooted in an emotional emptiness that can give people the need to feel constantly desired,” she says.

Some men who cheat suffer from sexual addiction and other mental disorders. Sex addicts, for example, are so enslaved to the rush of sexual activity that they have affairs, visit prostitutes, and compulsively watch pornography. "Ironically, many of them have happy relationships and feel guilty for cheating, but they can’t stop," says Lusterman. Someone with narcissistic personality disorder can’t resist the temptation because he is obsessed with being adored.

"It’s important to pay attention to the warning signs, but whether a man will stray or not boils down to his level of honesty within the relationship and his loyalty to you," says Lusterman.

“It is one of the problems of our time,” said Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist and host of VH1’s “Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew,” of sexual addiction. “We’ve just been through a period of history where sexuality was viewed as a revolution and [people thought] it’s okay to do whatever you’re into, but the fact is, sexuality has become a drug in our culture,” he continued.

On the Oprah Winfrey show, Dr. Drew defined sex addiction as an intimacy disorder, explaining that people who are addicted to sex may be afraid of or unfamiliar with intimacy, so they substitute sex for real human closeness.

"Sexuality is something that should make you feel good about yourself," Dr. Drew said. "[When you're a sex addict], you’ve lost control of your sexuality." He went on to explain that people who experience negative consequences from their addiction but continue the behavior are considered addicts. "The biggest issue is consequences," he said. "Work, school, finances, relationships, health, legal status…those areas of your life are being threatened."

Dr. Drew told Oprah that 80 to 90 percent of sex addicts suffered trauma as children. "If you have a history of trauma, particularly sexual trauma, in childhood, you want to look very carefully at this behavior," he said.

These terrorizing experiences can influence who you’re drawn to as an adult. "The people and places that cause terror in childhood cause attraction in adulthood," he said. "We end up being repetitively attracted to the same kind of person that obliges us by acting out the same behavior over again."

On “Sex Rehab,” Dr. Drew and a team of addiction specialists work with self-confessed sex addicts to help them overcome their addiction. On the first day, the participants are told that they can have no porn or sex toys, and that they can’t engage in touching, masturbation, or sex.

Amber Smith, a former Sports Illustrated swimwear model, told Oprah that she came to Dr. Drew to get help with her unhealthy obsession with men. After recovering from a drug addiction, Smith said she became intent on meeting men. "I wake up every day, and I go boy hunting to get a hit of the guy," she said. "I feel like I’m falling apart. This is a thousand times more fearful than drug rehab."

Dr. Drew said Amber struggles with another form of sex addiction—love addiction. "In love addiction that experience of: ‘Oh my God, I’m in love…I feel whole, and I feel like I’ve known this person forever.’ That is a feeling that you have to have all the time," he said. "You become addicted to it."

According to Dr. Drew, women often start out as love addicts and over time develop into sex addicts. Amber traces her problems back to her childhood. Her father left home when she was 3 years old, and as an adult, she says she became obsessed with men who look just like him. Amber said her obsessions aren’t fatal attractions, but she becomes severely depressed when she doesn’t see these men.

Amber left rehab six months ago, but says that even though she has the tools she needs to overcome her cycle, it’s very hard for her to stop.

Rock drummer Phil Varone also appeared to talk with Dr. Drew and Oprah, explaining that unlike most sex addicts, he had a happy childhood and supportive parents. As an adult, he found himself incapable of holding on to a relationship. "I just can’t have a relationship because I’m so addicted to a woman’s body," he said. "I have to have them.”

Phil estimates that he’s had sex with more than 3,000 women, and yet he’s afraid of dying alone. "I refer to my alter ego as Hans because he was the rock star. He was the guy who came into the room, you know, pointed a finger and got any woman he wanted," he said. "Phil went to the hotel room alone and just cried on a bed."

After completing Dr. Drew’s rehab program six months ago, Phil was very scared and confused, but now he’s starting to care about someone other than himself. "I’m really even more sorry for my old relationships," he said. "The ones that I really hurt are the ones that I truly feel bad about."

Jennie Ketcham, another patient of Dr. Drew’s, is a former porn star who went by the name Penny Flame. She said she had no interest in intimacy—just in sex. She opened up to Dr. Drew that she suffered a traumatic childhood, losing her virginity at age 12 and having sex with boys in middle school.

"It made me feel powerful over the boys. But, I mean, it totally backfired," she said. "The whole middle school found out that I had a new game to play, and they’d sing songs at lunch. They’d sing, ’1, 2, 3, 4, Jennie Ketcham is a whore.’”

Since leaving rehab, Jennie has abstained from drinking, sex, and pornography. “Rehab really shattered this facade that I’ve been putting on," she said. "Once those pieces were strewn across the rehab floor, the work that I’ve done in picking them up and putting them back together has made me feel a lot less like a monster…but there are certainly days."

Jennie said she needs to get to know herself again before pursuing an intimate relationship with another person. "I haven’t had one up to this point," she said.

Oprah and Dr. Drew also talked to a married couple who struggled with sex addiction. After being married for four years, Elaine discovered that her husband, Jonathan, was secretly addicted to porn, which led him to sex chat rooms and sex with prostitutes.

During this time, Jonathan said he hid his addiction out of shame, and though he felt a release when he had sex, he didn’t enjoy these extramarital relationships. "There’s the thrill of sex, but it’s just so filled with shame and secrecy," he said. "It also brought such feelings of guilt."

The couple separated when Elaine first found out about Jonathan’s addiction, but they have been back together for ten years. "We always ask people to kind of take a breathing period. There may need to be a separation for a period of time," Jonathan said. "We have found that our intimacy in our relationship and our connection is vastly better than we ever imagined it could be…There is hope for change."

Dr. Drew said a marriage plagued by sex addiction can survive if both partners are committed to the recovery process. "It can’t be a one-way street," he said.

"We first have them do a timeline of their life and talk about all the major events and traumas," Dr. Drew said. "We’re jumping in deeply into the feelings and these things that they’ve been detached from and avoiding many times their whole lives."

Dr. Drew said this makes sex addiction the most difficult and painful to treat, and for some, recovery can take three to five years.

"It is a relationship with the self that is flawed. Parts of the self get literally walled off from them. They can’t love them. They can’t even access them."

Sex addiction can affect anyone, including high-profile men like actor David Duchovny and former ESPN analyst Steve Phillips, who recently entered rehab for sex addiction after being fired from ESPN for having intimate relationships with co-workers on the show.

Rosemary Black of the New York Daily News writes that sex addiction is no different from other addictions: wrecking relationships, destroying families and causing losses, pain and heartbreak.

“When your relationship isn’t going well and you are stressed out, you want to make the bad feelings go away and so some people reach for the fix that helps the feelings go away,” says Leslie Sokol, Ph.D., author of “Think Confident Be Confident.”

“Some people are able to rationalize seeking out sex because they tell themselves, ‘I have been so good in other ways that I should be able to have this.’ Or they may rationalize it by saying that their wife has turned them down or that they feel unattractive,” Sokol continues.

Sex addiction is a distraction from one’s feelings, according to psychologist David Eigen. “A lot of men use sex as a replacement for other emotions and when they are not fulfilled in other areas,” he explains.

Sex addiction has an obsessive-compulsive component to it, says psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert. “There’s a lack of impulsive control here, as the reward far outweighs the risk at the time,” he says. “It’s often the risk that drives the person toward the behavior.”

For some, the risks that a sex addict is willing to take can result in adverse and life-altering changes: a public confession, in-patient treatment, the end of a marriage. Steve Phillips’ wife, Marni Phillips, filed for divorce last month; David Duchovny and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, were separated for some time after he confessed about his sex addiction, though they are now reunited; and British actor and comic Russell Brand wrote a book that detailed his addiction and recovery at a Philadelphia rehab center in 2005.

Treatment can be effective but may only be started because the sex addict gets scared, Alpert says. “For example, he might get a diagnosis of an STD, or a significant other may find out about the sexual escapades,” says Alpert. “Their business and money may be impacted, or a boss or colleague may learn of the activities.”

The most effective treatment, which Alpert says can be done in an office-based setting, should focus on identifying the reasons for the person’s actions and developing new coping strategies.

Sokol feels that nearly everyone has the potential for an addiction, but that some people are much more vulnerable. “For some, the addictive urge crosses over the line to where it starts to compromise relationships and impede a person’s ability to get things done and meet their goals,” she says.

For those who eventually seek treatment for sex addiction, overcoming the feelings of helplessness is an important goal, Sokol says. “A sex addict needs to say to himself that despite all the mistakes he has made, he is a decent person,” she says. “He needs to want to change things, to want to matter again to the people who matter to him.”

Steve Phillips, the ESPN baseball analyst who was fired recently for having an affair with a 22-year-old production assistant, entered a rehab center for sex addiction treatment.

"This was planned in advance. It has nothing to do with him getting fired," agent Steve Lefkowitz said of Phillips entering rehab. "He’s trying to save his marriage."

Oren Yaniv of the Daily News writes that Brooke Hundley, the other party in the sordid three-night stand, also lost her ESPN job on Monday.

"Brooke Hundley is no longer working here," said ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz. "She was fired today." The Ithaca College graduate had worked in remote game production since Sept. 2008.

Phillips was notified that he had been fired from ESPN just minutes before the news was made public during Game 6 of the American League Champion Series.

After the affair ended in July, Hundley reportedly stalked Phillips’ son on Facebook, called his wife, Marni, and even wrote her a tawdry letter.

Marni Phillips filed for divorce Sept. 14. Her husband also admitted to bedding a Mets employee in 1998.

"Obviously, he has a problem and he fell off the wagon," Lefkowitz said. "Even though she filed for divorce, they’re trying to work it out. He’s trying to get better first."

Sexual addiction can affect anyone, from a housewife to a high-profile businessman to a Hollywood celebrity. Susan King of the Calgary Herald writes that celebrity sex scandals are nothing new, citing the recent arrest of Roman Polanski for once having sex with a 13-year-old girl and David Letterman’s confession of having sexual relationships with several female members of his staff over the years.

Celebrities have been placed in the spotlight for sex scandals for decades. In 1942, two underage girls accused actor Errol Flynn—known for his womanizing and alcoholism—of statutory rape. He was acquitted of all charges, but his hedonistic lifestyle caught up with him and he died at age 50, with his 17-year-old girlfriend by his side.

Former Brat Packer Rob Lowe was involved in a sex scandal over a videotape made in 1988 of him having sex with two girls, one of whom was only 16. Also on the tape were sequences of Lowe and a friend having sex with a model in a hotel room in Paris. Lowe entered a rehab clinic for alcohol abuse and sex addiction, and has now been married for 18 years.

Oscar-winning director and actor Woody Allen made several films with longtime girlfriend Mia Farrow, with whom he had three children. But in 1992, Farrow came across naked photos of her daughter Soon-Yi Previn in Allen’s apartment. In the custody battle that followed, Farrow accused Allen of molesting their seven-year-old daughter Dylan. The judge said the sex abuse charges were inconclusive but stated that his conduct with Soon-Yi was “grossly inappropriate,” especially since she could be considered his stepdaughter. Allen says he never had a paternal relationship with her. Despite the scandal, Allen married Soon-Yi in 1997, and they have two children.

Just before the release of his first American movie, 1995’s Nine Months, British actor Hugh Grant was arrested by Los Angeles vice officers near Sunset Boulevard for misdemeanor lewd conduct in a public place with prostitute Divine Brown. After pleading no contest, Grant was fined and placed on two years’ probation. He was also ordered to complete an AIDS education program.

Charlie Sheen plays a womanizing bachelor on the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men—something he has real-life experience with. In 1995, while battling drug problems, a woman sued Sheen, stating that he struck her in the head several times when she refused to have sex with him. During the trial of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, it was disclosed that Sheen paid about $50,000 for ordering her call girls more than 12 times.

In 1991, Paul Reubens (who played Pee Wee Herman on the hit TV show and subsequent movies) was arrested in Sarasota, Florida, for masturbating publicly in an adult theater. This was not his first arrest; in 1971 he was arrested for loitering and prowling near an adult theater, although charges were later dropped. In 2002, Reubens learned that police were at his house with a search warrant, acting on a tip from a witness in the pornography case against actor Jeffrey Jones.

Among over 70,000 items of kitsch memorabilia, police found dozens of what the city attorney’s office called a collection of child pornography. Reubens turned himself in to the LAPD and was charged with possession of obscene material, but later plead not guilty. He later pleaded guilty to avoid going to court and risking jail, and the child pornography charges against him were dropped. Reubens later stated that he was a collector of erotic art, and that his collection includes photographic studies of teen nudes which he considered innocent art.
